What Does the Name John Mean?

John is a biblical name, it has been adapted over the years through many different languages. It was orignally the Hebrew “Ioannes” and then “Johannes” in Latin before eventually becoming John in English.

There are versions of the name John in many different countries and the interpretation of the meaning varies slightly but it is generally considered to be along the lines of “God is Gracious”.

How Popular is the Name John?

The name John has been in the top 30 names in the US for the last 20 years. In 2000 it was at number 14 but it has dropped a little since then and was ranked at 27th in 2021, when it was used for 8130 babies.

While the name is traditionally popular in the UK, it has been dropping in recent years and ranked at 154th in 2021, having been at 58th in 2000.
