I was tagged by the lovely Viv Simone to answer some questions about my experience of motherhood, so here they are!
1. FAVOURITE MUM HACK?
My favourite mum hack is delaying. It works particularly well with toddlers. When they want something you don’t want to do, just tell them you’ll do it in a minute. Their attention span is so short that they’ll likely have forgotten about it 5 minutes later.
2. MOST EMBARRASSING MUM MOMENT?
I went on a training course quite soon after having Boy Child. It was my first proper outing since giving birth and I hadn’t yet realised the importance of breast pads. I spent the whole morning looking very uncomfortable with my arms crossed over my chest to cover up my wet patches.
3. WHAT PART OF THE DAY DO YOU LOVE THE MOST?
I love the moment when they come running out of school to see me. I enjoy the quiet while they’re at school but I love being reunited with them more.
4. WHAT PART OF THE DAY DO YOU LIKE THE LEAST?
The moment we all walk in the door from school. Their are bags and coats and shoes everywhere, both children are trying to tell me about their day and everyone (including the cat) is demanding food.
5. THE WORST THING SOMEONE SAID TO YOU WHEN YOU WERE PREGNANT?
The thing I hated to hear was “oh, my morning sickness lasted my whole pregnancy”. I was very sick in both first trimesters and was terrified that it would last my whole pregnancy.
6. BABY NAME YOU DIDN’T AGREE ON?
Martha! I would have loved to have called Girl Child Martha but Chris was having none of it.
7. DO YOU CO SLEEP?
Nope. I am so scared of letting them in my bed and never getting them out again that neither of them have ever slept in our bed. Boy Child will be doing it for the first time soon because Girl Child is going to Beaver camp with Daddy so I’ve agreed to it as a special treat.
8. SOMETHING YOU BOUGHT BUT NEVER USED?
I bought about ten different changing bags before finding “the one”. I’d use them once and realise they weren’t right and then be off shopping for another one. I’m not someone who’s crazy about handbags but the changing bag I ended up with cost about 4 times what I’d usually spend on a bag.
9. 3 HOSPITAL BAG MUST HAVES?
Lip balm (I need it at the best of times, let alone when in labour.)
Water spray (labour is hot work.)
A decent bag (mine fell apart.)
10. ARE YOU ROUTINE MUM OR A GO WITH THE FLOW MUM AND WHAT DOES BEDTIME LOOK LIKE?
It’s routine all the way for me. I’d quite like to be a go with the flow kind of mum but I’m a control freak and need to know that sleep will happen. Our routine has actually changed very little from babyhood to primary years. While we’ve changed from evening bath the morning shower, bedtime still goes brush teeth, stories in our bed then Girl Child to bed followed by Boy Child to bed.
11. WHAT TYPE OF LABOUR DID YOU HAVE? WHAT PAIN RELIEF DID YOU CHOOSE?
I was challenged the other day to describe my labour in as few words as possible, it went like this:
Contractions start, contractions stop, contractions start, contractions stop (continue pattern for 48 hours), pain, pain, pain, bladder emptied with catheter, pain, pitocin drip, more pain, push, push, episiotomy, baby, spinal block, placenta “manually removed” (read: pulled out), stitches (botched).
Baby 2 was text book though..
12. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN MUM SHAMED?
I don’t think so but I can be a bit oblivious to these things so may not have noticed anyway!
13. THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED SINCE BECOMING A MUM?
Dealing with the lack of alone time. As an introvert, I need a certain amount of time by myself to recharge and kids really aren’t keen on leaving you alone..
14. THE BEST BIT ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN – BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D GIVE TO A NEW MUM?
This too shall pass. Whatever horrifying phase your child is currently in, it will pass. I can’t promise the next one will be better, but it will at least be different.
15. WHO’S YOUR MUM CRUSH?
My Mum is definitely the awesomist Mum I know.
16. AND WHO DO YOU TAG?
I now tag the following fab mum bloggers to give their answers:
